Leah Umansky is a New Yorker by birth, a teacher by choice, and an anglophile at heart. She earned her MFA in Poetry at Sarah Lawrence College and is a recipient of a 1-week fellowship at the Norman Mailer Writers Colony. She is a contributing writer for both BOMB Magazine’s BOMBLOG and for The Rumpus. This edition’s featured poets:
1. ANTHONY CAPPO
Anthony Cappo is an MFA candidate in poetry at Sarah Lawrence College. Before going to grad school, he worked, at various times, as a lawyer, waiter, house painter, and jazz singer. His work has appeared in Connotation Press – An Online Artifact, Lyre Lyre, The Boiler Journal, and other publications. Although he’s lived in New York City for 17 years, he grew up in South Jersey, and will remain forever loyal to the Phillies.
2. GREGORY CROSBY
Gregory Crosby used to be an art critic, but then thought better of it. His poetry has appeared in several journals, including Court Green, Epiphany, Copper Nickel, Leveler, Ping Pong, & Rattle. In 2002, as a poetry consultant to the City of Las Vegas, he was instrumental in the creation of the Lewis Avenue Poets Bridge, a public art project in downtown Las Vegas. His dedicatory poem for the project, “The Long Shot,” was subsequently reproduced in bronze and installed in the park, and was included in the 2008 anthology Literary Nevada: Writings from the Silver State (University of Nevada Press). He is co-editor, with Jillian Brall, of the online poetry journal Lyre Lyre, and is currently co-curator of the long-running EARSHOT reading series.
3. MATTHEW DADDONA
Matthew Daddona has published poetry and reviews in Slice, The Southampton Review, Tuesday: An Art Project, Electric Literature, elimae, InDigest, Anderbo, among others. In 2011, he collaborated on a chapbook with poet/scholar Tim Wood, using Wittgenstein’s aphorisms as poetic conversation. He is the recipient of an Academy of American Poets prize and a Beatrice Dubin Rose award. Matthew edits an online review journal, Tottenville Review, and is a member of the group Flash Point, a text and jazz-performance ensemble that blends poetry, fiction, and flash fiction with live music.
4. MICHAEL TYRELL
Michael Tyrell is the author of the poetry collection The Wanted and co-editor, with Julia Spicher Kasdorf, ofBroken Land: Poems of Brooklyn. He has poems in recent or forthcoming issues of Battersea Review, The Adroit Journal, Fogged Clarity, and The New Republic. He teaches at New York University.
5. JOE WINKLER
Joe Winkler is a freelance writer living in the Upper West side. He writes for Tablet Magazine, Vol1Brooklyn and theRumpus. He really likes websites.
